Library Garden team – Partnership with NCC’s Morpeth Library
GMDT are working in partnership with NCC Librarian Sarah-Jane Kennedy-Robson in making available plots around the new Leisure Centre for groups or individuals to plant flowers / bulbs and and maintain – giving the area much more colourful display of flowers.
Latest Update – August 2025:
Teams from GMDT Environment, Morpeth Litter Group and NCC Library came together for 2 sessions of 2.5 hours each day and cleared fully all weeds from the beds – 37 bags taken away.
The area now looks much better ready for Autumn – we will have to return to the beds in October to complete the final cleanup ready for winter.

Tuesday 3rd June our 1st come-together as a team took place and with the support of 13 people from NCC payroll team, their day working in the community, we collected 21 bags of weeds which were taken away by NCC Carlisle Park team. 12 bags of compost were also laid down and many new plants have been put in the ground. Great team work. What is NEXT With central beds adopted – we need to see if other groups / iondividuals in the town will adopt the beds that run down the side of the Leisure centre. in total we are looking at 7 separate beds to be adopted. It would be great if we could create a GMDT Environment Library Garden team where we can adopt one of the beds, could you help me by becoming involved? it would be just 2 hours a month. |

Historic updates
In November 2024 – with the help from Morpeth Litter Group and GMDT Environment volunteers a major clear out of many the existing beds was completed – see photos below:

Mid November 2024 With the help volunteers from Morpeth Lions, Morpeth Litter Group and GMDT Environment volunteers , £600 of bulbs were planted including crocus, snowdrops, tete a tete, daffodils – see photos below for the new display we had in spring 2025.

June 2025
CROWDFUNDING: With support from British Airways (Fund matching) and Crowdfunding , with the superb help from BA’s Climate fund project we raised £1600 – £800 matched by British Airways. This has helped us to purchase of plants and tools etc taking the project forward in Summer 2025..
We have been able to obtain the support for the 4 central beds, all adopted as follows:
- Morpeth Swimming Club – Aqua Fit
- Morpeth Library / NCC Payroll team
- Kevi School Environment (Send) team
- Lesley Griffiths & her Medical plant garden
On Tuesday 5th and Wednesday 6th August 2025 , 2 teams came along from GMDT, Morpeth Litter Group and Library staff – 28 man hours expended tidying up the side beds – 37 bags collected.
The project has a number of stages:
2025: New groups / individuals adopting the beds that run down the centre of the path, alongside of the new Leisure Centre.
2026: Delivery of a new play area for young people that runs along the side of the ramp going up to the new Leisure Centre. This will involve:
a. Killing all weeds / grasses in the section
b. Removing all the stones in the patch of land
c. Spreading of new top soil
d. Laying of grass seed
2026: Aspirations to landscape the area in front of the Terrace Car park – for example could we have displays similar to what was planted in Deuchar Park in 2018 which celebrated the end of
The aim is provide the opportunity for anyone to improve their wellbeing by being active and seeing the fruits of their labours with beautiful display of flowers over the summer and autumn.
