GMDT PROJECT LEAD:  Dai Richards

In autumn 2022 The Morpeth Litter Group (MLG) coordinated the tidying up of the Rear path that approaches the Northbound platform, MLG planted over 6000 spring bulbs, with volunteers from GMDT, Morpeth Lions and Rotary. These were planted beside the northern approach path to the station, plus also the lower path to the Mafeking roundabout. Further bulbs planted in 2024 Twice a year we endeavour to cut the foliage. Spring it has a beautiful display of colours from Crocus, Daffodils, Tulips, Tete a Tete here, making this area so much more attractive – we have also seen a reduction in littering.

We were hoping in 2025 we could form a small team to maintain this area, so far this has been possible – do you think you can spare 2 hours at the end of months May – October to keep the area tidy – if interested please contact us by email info@gmdt.org.

The following areas have been actioned since Autumn 2022:

Autumn 2022: Morpeth Litter Group donated many thousand of  bulbs (Crocus, Daffodils, Tete a Tete, Snowdrops, Tulips etc were planted on either side of the rear path that goes down from the station tunnel down to Mafeking Roundabout. With the help of volunteers from Rotary and Morpeth Lions over 8000 bulbs were planted in October / November 2022, the spring display has been been enjoyed by many.

Autumn 2023: Further set of bulbs were planted in October 2023. With the help from NCC we have been able to plant 100’s of primulas – they have survived the lack of watering and given us a beautiful display of red and blue colour over the year.

Summer 2024: Some Annuals were planted by GMDT Environment director – giving us a few weeks of additional colours. Also we planted a number of bushes and more primulae plants giving us a beautiful display in March 2025:

Future plans:

October 2025:  address gaps in the display of crocus bulbs to fill gaps in the display – can you help?

March 2026: Planting of new Annual plants in 2026

Bank of the path that Path down to Mafeking roundabout

100s of Daffodils, snowdrops, crocus, tete a tete planted here on October 2022. Display of daffodils in spring 2023 was wonderful , unfortunately daffodils in Spring 2024 just showed green shoots with no flowers, this could require replanting daffodils back in this area.

ADOPT A BIN:

With the help of Morpeth Litter Group’s, Adopt a Street volunteer – John Chappell, the rubbish bag in the cradle at the top of slope is emptied regularly – this new bin replaces the Morpeth Town Council blue bin that was removed,3 years ago after being vandalised. With the new adopted cradle bin this area is now effectively litter free and makes it much more  attractive to visitors and station users during the year.

October 2023: Adoption of small section along the wall at Deuchar Park entrance:

Have you seen the beautiful display of spring bulbs, especially the daffodils that have appeared since 2024. These are more spring bulbs donated by Morpeth Litter Group, and bluebells provided by Morpeth Rotary. A joint team from Morpeth Litter Group, GMDT and Morpeth Rotary helped to plant these bulbs in October 2023.

It was hoped we could get summer plants planted this year, this involves the formation of a small team to maintain this area, so far this has been possible – do you think you can spare 2 hours at the end of months May – October to keep the area tidy – if interested please contact us by email info@gmdt.org.
