In 2019/21 as the station building work was nearing completion it became apparent that the approach from the car park was unsightly. The GMDT Environment Group decided to explore options for landscaping various plots of land. Liaison with Northern Railways resulted in a partnership, as part of their “Station Adoption Scheme” through which some funding has been obtained, resulting in minimal outlay by the Trust. Further excellent partnership support was then provided by Morpeth Lions and Rotary clubs and the Morpeth Litter Group. So, four charities have been involved in the scheme. Liaison with Network Rail via Northern Railways resulted in the donation of railway sleepers to form raised flower beds, with topsoil provided free by a local farmer. Expertise within the team resulted in the provision of sustainable planting in the raised beds, with an ornamental gravel surround and evolving rockery area adjacent to the building.
With support from Morpeth Lions, Rotary of Morpeth, Morpeth Litter Group and GMDT Environment lead Hugh Edmundson the plants have survived and giving us a beautiful burst of colour in the summer months. 2025 has been a challenged due to the long periods of very hot months, it is great to see the plants thrive showing we have been successful in keeping the plants watered – the summer display of colour has been lovely to see – appreciated by many rail travellers and visitors to Morpeth.
Working with Northern Railways and Network Rail, the unkempt land which previously contained a temporary ticket office has had the undulating concrete footpath removed. In March 2025 Northern Railway have landscaped this area with new fencing, gravel has been laid down and 2 new benches installed – the area is being widely used by the public. It is planned that GMDT in partnership with Rotary, Morpeth Lions and Morpeth Litter Group will add further plants in this area with a new tub, trellis at the rear of the rockery section. Northern Railway will also place another bench at the rear of the section and with the help of Rural Design Centre – Morpeth bought by them a new picnic table will be placed in the centre of the area.
