The tall scaffolding on the railway station is currently – if temporary – the highest point in Morpeth – and the views are just great!
Removal of chimneys and restoration of external masonry…
Relaid paving slabs and new window frames…
Clearance and refurbishment is continuing – amazing what is being uncovered – and things are beginning to take shape…
Cllr Peter Jackson (Leader NCC) and Cllr Richard Wearmouth Cabinet member for Economic Development visited the site and were welcomed by David Lodge, CEO of GMDT.
And work progresses on restoring timber supports…
Part of the station refurbishment involves restoring the chimney stacks – which were reduced in size at some point – to their height in the original build. Some of the refurbished stacks are being sourced through architectural salvage, but some – as these images show – and being newly crafted at Classic Masonry Works:
More scaffolding, Ticket office being stripped and window refurbishment being carried out
Extensive scaffolding has appeared overnight…
… this represents a major milestone in the refurbishment because it involved turning off the overhead power-lines on the ECML, the sort of “facility” that Network Rail are understandably chary about.
Some attractive original fireplaces have been revealed – and windows have been removed…
