Spencer is described as “a fable from a true tragedy”, depicting the Royal Family’s Christmas celebrations at Sandringham in 1991, at the time when Diana’s marriage to Charles was coming to an end, with Camilla ever present in the background. The film places the audience in its heroine’s state of mind as her anxiety and depression start to get the better of her. Kristen Stewart gives a note perfect performance as the Princess of Wales, with excellent supporting roles by Timothy Spall as the family’s equerry and Sally Hawkins as Diana’s dresser.
“Larraín’s approach to the material is rich and intoxicating and altogether magnificent. Kristen Stewart proves entirely compelling in the title role. She gives an awkward and mannered performance as Diana, (and she) captures the agony of a woman so programmed and insulated that she feels she has no escape and has lost sight of who she is.” Xan Brooks, The Guardian
