Tommy's Field Footpath Improvements

The Tommy's Field Project funded through the Castle Woods & Water (CW&W) initiative, saw work starting to improve the footpaths and fencing in the area on 26th August. This project is part of a bigger programme aimed at maintaining and improving woodlands, paths and historic buildings in the Six-mile corridor between Mitford and Bothal Castle.

Work was also completed on on the footpath that runs through the Tommy's Field allotment. Parts of the riverside footpath include a tapping rail for the blind or partially sighted. As part of the project we are also replacing all the old fencing which in some parts was missing or very damaged and worn.

The project is being undertaken in collaboration with the Environment Agency, the Borough and County Councils and the Tommy's Field Allotment Association. The first phase was completed at the beginning of October. The County Council has already completed work to update the Cotting Burn footbridge.

The second phase of the project will include new seating and interpretation on the history and wildlife of the area. The artwork for the interpretation is being provided by John Caffrey, a local artist who is on the GMDT environment interest group.
