Environment

The Environment Interest Group has been involved with many projects across Morpeth throughout the year. The Tommy's Field Project, funded through the CW&W initiative, will deliver improvements to the footpaths, fencing and bridges.GMDT, in partnership with CMBC has successfully delivered the annual Castle Morpeth Borough Council walking festival, which has run with increasing success over the last four years. In 2008, GMDT will take over the running of the festival from CMBC.

The car park at Mitford Castle should be completed by Castle Morpeth Borough Council by the end of 2008 and will contain suitable signage developed in partnership with GMDT. A fish pass at Highford Weir has been considered to enable migratory fish to move further upstream. Originally costs were very high, but the Environment Agency now have a design which could be fitted to the weir at some 15-20% of the original cost.

Finally the advent of a new Unitary authority will undoubtedly provide new challenges for GMDT but the Environment Interest Group is looking forward to the year ahead and to working in partnership to deliver some exciting projects.
